  This portfolio has allowed me to reclaim and connect to a culture I had been ashamed of. My grandpa comes from the Appalachian region. His family were sharecroppers, miners, and mill workers. They had no running water and no electricity. In fact, a scholarship from Davidson is the only reason he was able to go to college. Something no one else in his family had been able to do. Exploring this music shows a rich and inclusive southern history, one I can be proud of. I think a desire for culture and identity is what drives a lot of white southerners to embrace troubled things like the confederate flag. This appalachian music helps form the identity of my New South
