“The dogwood use to be a very tall and straight tree. The kind of tree you could use to make a crucifix and hang a man, unjustly.

The tree started having flowers, with four petals.  At the end of each is a dot—the nails.

The tree also stopped being straight…it became crooked and bent and twisty, so no one could ever crucify a body on the dogwood tree.” – Ruth Leverett
